What You Need to Know About Meta’s Latest Paid Verification Subscription Service
Mark Zuckerberg, CEO of Meta, revealed in a Sunday Instagram update that a new subscription service called Meta Verified for paid verification will soon be available.
Meta has typically provided verification to prominent individuals such as politicians, executives, press members, and organizations, indicating their authenticity. Their new subscription service is comparable to Twitter’s updated service known as Twitter Blue, which also offers a verification badge to users who pay a monthly fee.
After Elon Musk, the new owner of Twitter, postponed and delayed the initial release, Twitter launched its updated subscription service, Twitter Blue, in December. The CEO of Tesla and SpaceX, who acquired Twitter for $44 billion in October, has referred to the new verification system as “the great leveler” and stated that it will provide “power to the people.”
The initial launch of Twitter Blue occurred in November, but due to users’ abuse of the new paid option by impersonating celebrities and brands, it was taken down.
On Sunday, a spokesperson from Meta stated that impersonation protections are in place with Meta Verified subscriptions. To qualify for the service, users must be 18 years old, fulfill minimum account activity criteria, and submit a government ID that corresponds with their profile name and photo. The subscription will also include “proactive monitoring” for account impersonation, as per the spokesperson.
Although Musk has expressed his desire to eventually remove badges from Twitter accounts that were verified before the Twitter Blue launch, a Meta spokesperson stated that the company will not alter the accounts that are currently verified as they test their service.
In conclusion, Meta’s new subscription service is an interesting development in the world of social media. It is essential to weigh the benefits and costs before subscribing to the service. While the verification badge is useful in providing account authentication, it is essential to remain vigilant and take other precautions to protect your account. So will you be subscribing?
